Found at the edge of forests, especially near oak trees, the unmistakable blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is also common in backyards. One of the loudest and most colourful songbirds, they’re known for a perky crest of feathers on top of their head and a dynamic blue back, a colour resulting from the brown pigment in their feathers that reflects blue spectrum light waves. Irresponsible forestry leads to loss of habitat and pesticide use threatens the population.
