The majestic polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the world’s largest land carnivore and the biggest bear species, weighing up to 800 kilograms and extending up to 2.8 metres long. In Canada, they inhabit ice-covered regions from the Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador, with Churchill, Manitoba often called the ‘polar bear capital of the world. Their populations are disappearing as climate change destroys much of the sea ice they call home.
