A diminutive and secretive bird that tends to nest in tree cavities where it is safer from predators, the northern pygmy owl (Glaucidium gnoma) is found in British Columbia and in Alberta. The smallest owl in Canada, it feeds on a variety of prey including birds, reptiles and small mammals and can carry prey weighing up to three times its own weight.
