The smallest of its species in North America, the downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens)  is an acrobatic forager, at home on the tiniest branch or slenderest surface. A regular visitor to woodlots, city parks and backyard bird feeders, they’re open to a variety of snacks including sunflower seeds, millet and peanuts, and won’t refuse a drink from a hummingbird feeder. Spring heat from climate change and increased urbanization are risks to this minute creature.
