The sea otter (Enhydra lutris), once extirpated from the Pacific coast of Canada due to overhunting, is once again prowling our coastal waters. As predators, their presence is key to maintaining the balance of the near-shore kelp ecosystems. Kelp forests hide them from hungry animals, like killer whales, sea lions and bald eagles. An oil spill would threaten their continued recovery.
