In 2001 less than 35 Vancouver Island marmots (Marmota vancouverensis) - North America’s most endangered mammal - remained in the wild. Their rapid demise is associated with extensive clearcutting that took place adjacent to their natural alpine habitat. A massive conservation effort is underway to save them.
